The BBC News Website
An excellent source of news. There is streaming media available of the latest headlines as well as links to the BBC World Service radio programs.
The New York Times
The best international news coverage available from a US newspaper. Some extra articles and searchable archives on the site. You must register to use the site.
The Financial Times
A good source for international news. Like the BBC, it offers perspectives not found in US publications.
The Washington Post
A good resource for domestic news. While you must register to take full advantage of the site, this allows you to create a customized start page (mywashingtonpost.com). I find this a useful feature.
Foreign Affairs Website
The site offers access to the journal's current and past content, as well as free access to author interviews, original commentary, thousands of book reviews, and other on-line resources. In addition, several current topics of particular interest are highlighted, with excerpts from relevant articles and links. Foreign Affairs is published by the Council on Foreign Relations, a New York and Washington, DC based organization which has a useful site of their own, with links to many resources for exploring U.S. foreign policy issues.
Foreign Policy Association
The Foreign Policy Association (FPA) is a national, nonprofit, nonpartisan, nongovernmental, educational organization founded in 1918 to educate Americans about the significant international issues that influence their lives. FPA provides impartial publications, programs and forums to increase public awareness of, and foster popular participation in, matters relating to those policy issues.
The Economist Website
A great source for weekly analysis of world events. There is limited content available anonymously, more with free registration. But full access to the site is limited to subscribers. Full access to the website is free to print subscibers.

Humanitarian & Regional News and Information

ReliefWeb
An exhaustive resource for news on the developing world. This resource was developed for humanitarian and development organizations. Much of the information here never makes it into mainstream media. This site offers email newsletter service.
UN IRIN News
This is the United Nations Integrated Regional Information Networks. Like ReliefWeb, it is an extensive source of information on the developing world. IRIN also offers email newsletter service.
International Crisis Group
The ICG site is a valuable resource. There is an online archive of their reports on various crises and regional situations.
allAfrica.com
allAfrica.com posts more than 700 new stories daily from over 100 African media organizations and from their own reporters. News available in English and French. It is also possible to incorporate their news headlines into your own website, as I have done for wereilu.com. See African News Headlines.
The Middle East Institute
The Middle East Institute website provides access to information and analysis of issues in the Middle East. Though dedicated to the pursuit of peace in the Middle East, resources are more wide-reaching that the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
Hahooa Directory
A directory of Middle East related news outlets. Available in Arabic, French, and English.

Alternative News Sources

Nothing pejorative is meant by "alternative," despite the left wing/radical slant of some of these sites. To your surprise, the mainstream media doesn't cover everything.

AlterNet.Org
AlterNet's online magazine provides a mix of news, opinion and investigative journalism on subjects ranging from the environment, the drug war, technology and cultural trends to policy debate, sexual politics and health issues. The AlterNet article database includes more than 7,000 stories from over 200 sources.
The Center for Public Integrity
The mission of the Center for Public Integrity is to provide the American people with the findings of our investigations and analyses of public service, government accountability and ethics related issues.
opensecrets.org
The Center for Responsive Politics is a non-partisan, non-profit research group based in Washington, D.C. that tracks money in politics, and its effect on elections and public policy. The Center conducts computer-based research on campaign finance issues for the news media, academics, activists, and the public at large. The Center’s work is aimed at creating a more educated voter, an involved citizenry, and a more responsive government.

MediaChannel.org is a nonprofit, public interest Web site dedicated to global media issues. MediaChannel offers news, reports and commentary from our international network of media-issues organizations and publications, as well as original features from contributors and staff.
TomPaine.com
